On 15th June 1808 during the siege of Saragossa, Augustina Aragon, seeing a gunner dying of his wounds, went forward and loaded a 24 pounder cannon and fire it at point blank range at the invading French. This heroic action encouraged the patriots who rushed to the battery and repulsed the enemy. Augustina was decorated with a shield of honour and the insignia of a captain.
