Description: Stummel with ellipsoid bowl.

The painting is entitled “Middleton”, the name of the famous racehorse.  The horse was owned by Colonel Middleton, who was also renowned as the lover of the Empress Elizabeth Hapsburg.  The jockey, Jem Robson, won the 1836 Derby on Middleton.  This was Robson’s sixth Derby win, a record which was only recently beaten by Lester Piggot.  The reverse of the bowl is initialled “TD”.

Silver lid engraved with the date 1836, and silver fittings.

Displayed on the original stem, length 450 mm, made of stag’s horn inlaid with mother-of-pearl and tortoise shell.
